GIFs are limited to 256 colors, so some visual banding or color shifts are normal — especially with gradients, photos, or complex animations. If you see a lot of discoloration, try recapturing with a tighter crop or simpler content. Browser rendering can also introduce slight variations, which is expected behavior.
stop screenshotting. stop recording your whole desktop.
snip the rectangle. hit record. done.
SnipGIF is a Chrome extension that records a user-selected region of the current browser tab and produces an animated GIF locally on your device.
Minimal license verification data only. SnipGIF does not collect, transmit, store, sell, or share any personal information, browsing data, page contents, or recorded GIFs.
Free tier (no data collection): If you use SnipGIF for free, no data is transmitted anywhere. The extension runs entirely on your device.
Pro tier (license validation only): If you purchase the Pro upgrade, SnipGIF transmits only your license key and an installation instance ID to validate your license. This data is sent to a Cloudflare Worker only when you activate your license or on extension startup.
Specifically, SnipGIF does not:
When you record a GIF, frames are captured via Chrome's tabCapture API, cropped and encoded entirely in memory inside the extension, and discarded when you close the preview. When you click Save GIF…, Chrome's standard download dialog opens — SnipGIF never records where you saved it.
SnipGIF requests only what's strictly needed: activeTab (draw the selection overlay), scripting (inject the overlay), tabCapture (capture the video stream), offscreen (run the GIF encoder), downloads (invoke Chrome's save dialog), storage (store license status), and a host permission for license validation.
SnipGIF is a general-purpose utility and is not directed at children under 13. Because no data is collected, no children's data is collected either.
