SnipGIF Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 8, 2026
SnipGIF is a Chrome extension that records a user-selected region of the
current browser tab and produces an animated GIF locally on your device.
Data we collect
Minimal license verification data only. SnipGIF does not collect, transmit, store, sell, or
share any personal information, browsing data, page contents, or recorded
GIFs.
Free tier (no data collection)
If you use SnipGIF for free, no data is transmitted anywhere. The extension runs entirely on your device.
Pro tier (license validation only)
If you purchase the Pro upgrade ($9.99 one-time via Lemon Squeezy), SnipGIF transmits only the following to validate your license:
- Your license key (provided by Lemon Squeezy after purchase)
- An installation instance ID (a random identifier generated locally to prevent key sharing)
This data is sent to snipgif.andreilee0822.workers.dev (a Cloudflare Worker operated by the extension author) only when:
- You click "Activate License" and enter your key
- On extension startup (to revalidate an existing license)
License validation requests are sent over HTTPS. Your license key is stored locally in Chrome storage (encrypted by Chrome).
No email, name, payment details, or browsing data is transmitted by the extension. Payment processing is handled entirely by Lemon Squeezy.
Specifically, SnipGIF does not:
- Upload or transmit your recorded GIFs
- Send page contents, DOM, or any tab data
- Use analytics, telemetry, advertising IDs, or tracking pixels
- Read or transmit cookies, login state, or form contents
- Access browsing history, bookmarks, downloads history, or other tabs
- Track your usage or recordings
How recordings are handled
-
The extension uses Chrome's
tabCapture API to receive a
video stream from the active tab.
-
Frames are cropped, encoded into a GIF, and held in memory inside a
hidden offscreen document — never written to disk by the extension
itself.
-
When you click Save GIF…, Chrome's standard download
dialog opens and you choose where to save the file. The save location is
decided by you and managed by the browser; SnipGIF does not record where
you saved it.
-
When you close the preview, all in-memory frame data and the encoded GIF
are discarded.
Permissions
SnipGIF requests only the permissions strictly needed to record a tab region and validate Pro licenses:
-
activeTab — grants temporary access to the current tab
when you click the toolbar icon.
-
scripting — injects the selection overlay into the
active tab on click.
-
tabCapture — captures the current tab's video stream so
it can be encoded into a GIF.
-
offscreen — runs the frame sampler and GIF encoder in a
hidden document (MV3 service workers cannot hold a MediaStream
directly).
-
downloads — invokes Chrome's standard "Save As" dialog
when you click Save GIF….
-
storage — stores your license status locally (if you purchase Pro) and syncs it across your Chrome installations.
-
Host permission (snipgif.andreilee0822.workers.dev) — used exclusively for Pro license validation.
No data is sent to this endpoint if you use the free tier.
Children
SnipGIF is a general-purpose utility and is not directed at children under
13. Because no data is collected, no children's data is collected either.

opt-in cloud feature — the updated policy will be posted at this URL
before the new version is published. The date at the top of this document
